It Sounds Like Someone’s Walking in My Attic!

Table of Contents

Hearing strange sounds from your attic is almost never a good sign. However, it’s also not as uncommon as you might think. Many people living in houses frequently report hearing noises that resemble someone walking around in the attic.

There are various logical explanations for this that have nothing to do with home intruders. So don’t worry – just take some time to investigate the issue and find out what’s going on.

    Animals

The most common cause of footstep noises in your attic are animals running around. This includes:

    • Rats
    • Birds
    • Squirrels
    • Bats

Depending on where you live, you might have a high frequency of some of these animals in your area. Keep an ear out for additional noises. Those could give you a hint about what exactly you’re dealing with.

For example, if you hear flapping, that’s a good sign that it’s a bird or a bat. Squeaking could indicate various birds, as well as rats. Scratching could come from a number of animals, but is most commonly associated with mice. Bats can also scratch, although it’s more difficult to hear that noise in most cases.

    Plumbing

Another possible reason for hearing suspicious noises from your attic is your plumbing. If you have issues with your water pressure, you might start to hear loud banging noises from your pipes. This is normal and often resolves itself.

If it doesn’t though, you might have to get a professional to check on your plumbing. If you are using a water filter, that’s one possible cause of the problem. Otherwise, it could simply be caused by changes in the water pressure of your local water supply.

Check if your neighbours are experiencing similar problems. If it’s a common complaint about the neighbourhood, it might be time to call your city council and get them to investigate the problem.
